General information about Trisomy 18
Trisomy 18 or Edwards Syndrome is an extra 18th (3) chromosomes causing the child to have major organ problems, slow growth weight, slow growth rate and early deaths. 5-10% of children born with trisomy 18 do not make it past their 1st year. Approximately 5,000 children are born with it, its more common but a lot of the affected fetuses do not make it. Doctors believe that women who are older or younger have a higher risk of having a baby with trisomy 18, as the women age so do the eggs causing them to be weak and less healthy, however at any age you can have a baby who is affected by this syndrome. Trisomy 18 does not have a cure or even prevention. It can be detected during pregnancy but nothing can be done about it .
